mHealth for Diabetes Self Management

Using text messaging to extend diabetes self management support outside the clinic environment Innovative interventions are needed to address the growing burden of diabetes and associated costly and debilitating long-term complications. This seminar will present the evidence for a text message based diabetes self-management support programme for people with poorly controlled diabetes. The programme was developed through extensive end-user consultation and was designed to focus on those with low technology access, those living more remotely, and those from indigenous and ethnic minority populations. The programme’s effectiveness was assessed in a randomised controlled trial with participants followed up at 9 months and 2 years. The presentation will also include discussion of the challenges of implementing such programmes after research is complete.
